Celebrating National Women’s Day with Apex Real-Time Solutions: A Journey of Passion, Perseverance, and Progress in Supply Chain

At Apex Real-Time Solutions, we believe excellence knows no gender and progress thrives on inclusion. This National Women’s Day, we celebrate the remarkable contributions of women in our organisation, particularly in traditionally male-dominated sectors, like supply chain and technology.

This year, we are proud to share the personal journey of a remarkable female leader in our supply chain team, whose story exemplifies our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. Meet our recently appointed Project Office Manager, Kerry Vieira, whose career spans nearly three decades of innovation, leadership, and a deep-seated passion for making a difference.

A Legacy of Grit and a Passion for Progress

Inspired from a young age by her father’s unwavering work ethic in the logistics sector, Kerry’s path into supply chain management was almost destined. Beginning her career fresh out of high school in courier services in 1996, she gained hands-on experience in finance, operations, and branch management. Through each evolving role, she honed a versatile skill set, deepening her understanding of the intricacies within logistics and warehousing.

Her love for the supply chain industry was ignited during her early warehouse floor walks, an environment pulsating with activity and opportunity for improvement. Each new client brought fresh challenges, making every day dynamic and rewarding. “I was hooked,” she recalls, “because no two days were the same, and the work constantly pushed me to learn and innovate.”

She furthered her expertise with an International Leadership Development Course at GIBS, which was enriched by exposure to global supply chain practices during her overseas travels to Penn State University. She embraced a philosophy of lifelong learning and growth. Now, a month into her role at Apex-RTS, she embraces the possibilities of being part of a forward-thinking, tech-driven organisation.

Breaking Barriers and Rising Above Challenges

It’s no secret that the supply chain sector, especially the warehousing environment, hasn’t always welcomed women. Yet, the landscape is changing rapidly through persistence and the support of initiatives like the RMDP and ILDP programmes by SETAs. These programmes allow more women to join and thrive in the supply chain sector.

Kerry’s defining moment? Being at the forefront of launching South Africa’s first mobile, in-field delivery solution using handheld devices. “I spent days training couriers in their vehicles, getting to know their world. Their enthusiasm during the launch made all the hard work worth it. That kind of connection, that shared passion, is something I’ll never forget.”

Leadership with a Woman’s Perspective

What sets her approach apart is women’s distinctive perspective on problem-solving and leadership. “Women tend to ‘over-think’; if channelled productively, we explore solutions thoroughly, pushing boundaries to deliver superior outcomes.” She embodies a servant leadership style, prioritising her teams’ protection, growth, and empowerment.

Kerry’s career highlights include contributing to the exponential growth of a company from a modest five employees to over 3,500, a testament to her integral role in scaling operations and enhancing efficiency. She values every project, confident that even small changes can yield a significant impact.

Mentoring the Future and Fostering Inclusivity

“I was ‘raised by wolves’, my first two bosses challenged me repeatedly, teaching me resilience and accountability,” she reflects. Today, she pays it forward, mentoring without bias, nurturing talent based on merit, and breaking down gender barriers through equality.

She believes that while company culture plays a significant role in growth, it’s also about what leaders create within their teams. “Even if the broader culture isn’t perfect, I ensure my team culture uplifts, supports, and grows people.”

Advice to the Next Generation

Her advice to young women considering a supply chain career is resolute: “Go for it! It won’t always be easy, but with determination and passion, you’ll exceed your expectations.” She highlights key qualities like self-awareness and perseverance as essential to success.

She is excited by the rising number of women entering the supply chain industry and their demonstrated capability to perform at the highest levels without limitation. “We are here to stay and make a lasting impact.”

At Apex Real-Time Solutions, we’re proud to champion diversity and elevate voices like hers. On this National Women’s Day, we honour the resilience, intelligence, and impact of the women shaping the future of supply chain, tech, and beyond.
